Chevrolet is reviving the Desert Boss package for the 2027 Colorado, two years after quietly dropping it from the order books. The bundle of off-road gear will once again be tied to the ZR2, but this time buyers will get it fitted by the dealer rather than straight from the factory.
The package arrives alongside a bigger change for the whole range: GM's updated turbocharged 2.7-litre four-cylinder, which lifts output to 350 hp and 450 lb-ft.
The original Desert Boss launched in 2023 as a factory special and lasted a single year. It bundled a bull bar, roof-mounted light bar, rear sports bar and 17-inch wheels wearing 33-inch tyres.

What the 2027 package includes
The revived Desert Boss Special Edition carries a special off-road front bumper, a distinctive lighting package, Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers, Tech Bronze-finished recovery hooks, door sill plates and front-fender decals.
The headline item is the damper hardware. Jounce Control dampers are nitrogen-charged hydraulic bump stops designed to work alongside Multimatic's DSSV dampers. On the current Colorado ZR2 they are a $2,583 option, though they come standard on the ZR2 Bison.
Unlike the 2023 car, the 2027 package will be sold exclusively as a dealer-installed option, and Chevrolet will not offer it alongside the Bison or Midnight packages.
Pricing for the new package has not been announced. For reference, the 2023 edition added $9,295 to a regular Colorado's sticker.
A stronger engine across the range
The 2027 Colorado also switches to GM's updated turbocharged 2.7-litre inline-four, known internally as the L4B, which replaces the L3B. The engine is already fitted to the 2027 Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and it is rated at 350 hp and 450 lb-ft, up from 310 hp and 430 lb-ft.
That is a meaningful gain for a truck whose appeal rests on towing, hauling and off-road pace, and it brings the Colorado into line with its full-size siblings' latest engine. Pricing for the 2027 model year has not been announced either.
