Dodge is preparing to bring the supercharged 6.2-litre Hellcat V-8 back to the Charger range for the 2028 model year, according to internal documents obtained by MoparInsiders. The paperwork describes a rear-drive Hellcat variant offered in both the two-door coupe and four-door sedan body styles, paired with a ZF 8HP95 eight-speed automatic.

Car and Driver has asked Dodge to confirm the document and its contents but had not received a response at the time of its report, so nothing here is official until the brand says so.

Rear-drive only, in both body styles

The detail that stands out in the document is the driveline. Today's Hurricane-powered Chargers come with all-wheel drive as standard, but the Hellcat Chargers are described as rear-drive, in line with how the last-generation SRT cars were set up.

The same document shows the Hellcat powertrain will be offered in the four-door Charger sedan as well as the two-door coupe, with the eight-speed automatic handling the gears in either layout.

Where it sits in the 2028 range

The Hellcat would not stand alone. The document indicates the 2028 lineup keeps the 3.0-litre Hurricane inline-six in three states of tune: the 420-hp Standard Output, the 550-hp High Output and the 600-hp High Output Plus, the latter badged Super Bee.

Those sit alongside the electric Charger Daytona variants, with the supercharged 6.2-litre SRT engine rounding out the range at the top.

How much power? The document doesn't say

The paperwork leaves the 6.2-litre's output a mystery. One path is for Dodge to carry the Hellcat Hemi over unchanged at 717 hp. The other is the updated version of the engine, rated at 777 hp, that appears in the 2027 Ram 1500 SRT TRX pickup.

Either figure would put the new car comfortably above the 600-hp Hurricane flagship, which is the point of a halo variant. The rear-drive layout also echoes the last-generation Hellcat Charger, so the character should carry over even if the hardware is shared with the Ram.

Still unconfirmed

Dodge has not yet verified the document, and no timing beyond the 2028 model year, pricing or final specifications have been published. Car and Driver says it will update its report if the brand responds.
