Mazda Australia has opened orders for the updated MX-5, a car it badges as a 2026 model even though the year is nearly over, with customer deliveries beginning this month. Prices rise across the range by $1950, except the GT RS grades, which climb $4950.

The entry 2027 MX-5 G20 Roadster manual now starts at $44,590 before on-road costs, while the range-topping G20 RF GT RS manual sits at $61,740.

The price rises buy tangible equipment rather than nothing at all. Every MX-5 now gets lane-keep assist alongside the existing lane-departure warning, and the autonomous emergency braking system has been extended to detect cyclists as well as vehicles and pedestrians.

Recaros return after six years

The GT RS variants receive the more visible changes: standard Recaro bucket seats trimmed in Nappa leather and Alcantara with light grey stitching, plus Alcantara covering the dashboard, centre console, console lid and door cards.

Recaro seats last appeared in an Australian-market MX-5 on the 2019 30th Anniversary Edition, of which just 30 examples came here, though overseas-market cars have offered them since.

A green MX-5, inspired by primer

Zinc Green Metallic joins the palette, the first green paint offered on an Australian MX-5 in a decade.

Mazda says the colour was inspired not by a landscape or animal but by the colour and texture of zinc chromate primer, and describes the finish as having a solid-like texture. It is offered on both Roadster and RF body styles.

The rest of the range carries over unchanged: Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Jet Black Mica, Machine Grey Metallic and Aero Grey Metallic.

Mechanically untouched

No mechanical changes accompany the update. Every Australian MX-5 keeps the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 135kW and 205Nm, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

The full 2027 price list, before on-road costs: G20 Roadster manual $44,590; Roadster GT manual $51,240; Roadster GT auto $52,740; Roadster GT RS manual $57,240; RF GT manual $55,740; RF GT auto $57,240; RF GT Black Roof Tan Leather auto $58,260; RF GT RS manual $61,740.

The larger GT RS increase is easy to read as the price of the Recaro and Alcantara package, and the $3000 premium over the flat rise suggests the seats and trim are being costed directly into those grades. Buyers who want the lightest, simplest MX-5 can still have a base Roadster on a stick for $44,590, which keeps the car's value proposition intact despite the rises.
